From 11- 24 July 2023, we consulted on smaller changes to make it safer and easier for people to bike on Birdwood Street and South Karori Road. The proposed designs went to Koata Hātepe, Council’s Regulatory Process Committee, along with amendments suggested through public feedback, as well as a copy of all submissions.

Overall, Koata Hātepe approved the changes, which mean that:

  • Birdwood Street will have some parking removed near the lower end to provide space for an uphill bike lane as far as the intersection of Braithwaite Street and Messines Road
  • South Karori Road will have school pick-up and drop-off parking provided for, along with no stopping lines on the rise towards the school to encourage bikes off the footpath
  • the pedestrian crossing on South Karori Road will also be upgraded
  • On Friend Street, some signage and wayfinding will be installed to highlight this as a quiet route

For more information about the decision, you can watch the recorded meeting or read the meeting minutes on the committee meeting webpage.

Works will begin around late September 2023, and continue for several months.
