The Childers Terrace route runs from the Rongotai Road intersection to Queens Drive. In September 2017 we asked the community for feedback on two options for this street.

The impacts on intersections, pedestrian crossings and driveways will be detailed in the next stage of design.

ChildersTerrace 0Existing

Option A - Sharrow markings in both traffic lanes

ChildersTerrace A

Why Option A?

The sharrow markings will increase driver awareness of people on bikes. Traffic speeds would need to be reduced to improve safety. This option retains the footpaths on both sides of the road, unlike Option B.

  • Traffic lanes altered to both be 3.6m wide

  • No changes to the footpath

  • Approximately 15 parking spaces removed

  • Likely uptake by people on bikes: Low to moderate increase

Option B - Kerbside two-way bike lane on one side, footpath on one side only

ChildersTerrace B

Why Option B?

The kerbside bike lane improves safety for people on bikes, and encourages less confident riders to use the route. Unlike Option A, this option requires the removal of the footpath on on the west side of the road.

  • Traffic lanes reduced in width from 3.6m to 2.8m

  • Bike path protected by raised buffer
  • Footpath on hill side removed

  • About 15 parking spaces removed

  • Likely uptake by people on bikes: Moderate to high increase
