We're making it safer and easier for people who ride bikes

IGL Rongotai Road Outside CBD Proposed small

What’s changing?

  • The bike lanes will be away from moving traffic and protected by a raised concrete buffer, which people will be able to park against and use to safely get in and out of cars.
  • In time these lanes will connect with new bike paths and improved crossings that have already been put in around the new bus hub in Kilbirnie.
  • To allow residents to safely turn into and out of driveways, there will be fewer roadside parking spaces. Parking space for about 30 vehicles will remain – about 17 less than at the moment.
  • There will be changes to the kerbs around the bus stops to bring the bike lanes up to footpath level, to make it easy for people getting on and off buses. There will be red pavement markings to show these areas are shared with people on foot.
  • Mountable rubber speed control strips will be installed at driveways to remind people driving to take extra care as they cross the bike lane.
  • Traffic lanes will be remarked.
  • There will be changes at the intersection of Onepu and Rongotai roads to make it safer and easier for people on foot and on bikes.

What to expect during construction

  • Contractors plan to start at Tacy Street and work towards the Troy Street end. Work will then happen on the other side starting at Te Whiti Street and working towards Onepu Road.
  • People will have access in and out of their properties/driveways at all times.
  • The contractors will provide 48 hours’ notice when street parking is to be affected and they need a section to be free of cars.
  • The work may be noisy at times.
  • Equipment – similar to that used to pour kerbs – will be used to create the new concrete buffer islands.
  • Traffic management will be in place when required. This will include safe arrangements for people on bikes and on foot around the work site.

Contractors will be:

  • Digging out old kerbs and gutters and pouring new ones
  • Breaking and removing old asphalt and concrete
  • Laying new paths at the bus stops
  • Marking the bike paths with green and red surfacing
  • Resealing and remarking the road.

Where work is happening:

  • Diggers, trucks and other machinery will be operating at times so expect some noise.
  • Traffic management will be in place.
