Approved solution: kerbside bike path on both sides of the road
Why are we doing this?
Councillors approved plans for kerbside bike paths on Coutts Street, between Te Whiti Street and the airport tunnel, in March 2018. This route connects with other new bike paths in Kilbirnie and to Newtown. In the longer term it will also connect to bike paths in Miramar, and to Strathmore and Seatoun.
The plans have been changed slightly to allow 10 more car parking spaces than originally planned.
What’s next?
The next stage is to complete the detailed design, construction plans and an independent safety audit.

This design for a bike path on both sides of Coutts Street will connect well with the new lanes on Te Whiti Street and the bike paths on Rongotai Road. It will also connect easily with the airport tunnel to Miramar. The design gives better protection for people on bikes, and is appropriate for a busy road such as Coutts Street, which has a lot of fast-moving traffic.
- Parking for 58 vehicles will remain along this stretch – 22 fewer car parks than there are now.
- At the bus stops the bike path will be at footpath level to make it easier for people getting on and off the bus.
- Traffic lanes will be 3.2m wide.
- The footpath on both sides of the road will be at the standard width of 2.4m.
- New kerbs will be installed on both sides of the road.

Decision after community feedback
Kerbside bike lane on each side of the road, parking retained both sides - this option had more community support than Option A. It connects well with Te Whiti Street and Rongotai Road, and through the airport tunnel to Miramar. The proposed design gives better protection for people on bikes, and is appropriate for a busy through route such as Coutts Street, which has a lot of fast-moving traffic.
