Project in development: kerbside bike lane on each side of the road

Why are we doing this?

Councillors approved plans for kerbside bike lanes on Tirangi Road, between Coutts Street and Leonie Gill Pathway, at a meeting in March 2018. This route will connect with other new bike paths that have been or are being developed in Kilbirnie and to Newtown.

What’s next?

The next stage of this project is to complete the detailed design, construction plans and an independent safety audit.

The short section of path on Tirangi Road will make the connection between Leonie Gill Pathway, Coutts Street and the airport tunnel safer and easier with bike lanes on each side of Tirangi Road, protected by a raised buffer. To do this, the little-used street car parking spaces on this section will be removed.

  • Parking for 24 vehicles will be removed on this short section of Tirangi Road.
  • Traffic lanes will be 3.2m wide.

Option in development: Kerbside bike lane on each side of the road, parking removed on both sides

Why this solution?

This was the only proposed option for this short section of Tirangi Road. It had more community support than retaining the existing road layout. It provides a good connection with the Leonie Gill Pathway from Coutts Street and to the airport tunnel. The proposed design is appropriate for this busy through route.

Community feedback

One proposed solution for Tirangi Road (from Coutts Street to the Leonie Gill Pathway) was put forward for community feedback in September 2017.
