Have your say: One-way section of Wilson Street - now part of Newtown Connections (previously proposed as kerbside contra-flow bike lane with a buffer)
Approved: Two-way sections of Wilson Street and Coromandel Street - sharrow road markings
Why this solution?
The route on lower Wilson Street (the one-way section) is now part of the Newtown Connections project. If a contra-flow lane is developed, it would provide a good biking connection between Newtown and Kilbirnie. The design proposed earlier in 2018 would be appropriate for this relatively quiet one-way street with less traffic and low vehicle speeds.
The following impacts were proposed as part of the Kilbirnie Connections project consulted on in early 2018.
- On the one-way section of Wilson Street, 15 parking spaces would be removed on the southern side of the road. Four angled parking bays would be added at the Daniell Street intersection. There are no parking changes on the two-way section.
- On the one-way section of Wilson Street, the width of the traffic lane would be narrowed slightly from 3.2m to 3m.
- Designating the short section of footpath at the end of Wilson Street (next to Riddiford Street) as a shared path.
- Putting in a new section of shared path next to the footpath behind the new angled parking at Daniell Street.
