For the eastern suburbs, a package of routes was proposed in 2015–2016 to connect local shopping centres, schools, community facilities and neighbourhoods.
The Council set up a community working group (Eastern Suburbs Corridor and Route Prioritisation Working Group) in November 2015, made up of community representatives and ward councillors:
The group met four times and identified key local destinations; priority corridors; and preferred routes. We then asked the public for their feedback.
Public consultation was held during 26 April – 23 May 2016. People could give their feedback on two potential safe cycling corridors, and two possible routes within each corridor:
We held two public drop-in sessions at the ASB Sports Centre, as well as meetings for local business groups in Miramar and Kilbirnie. Information was provided to residents, businesses, schools, community centres and libraries.
393 people provided feedback online during the consultation.
People said they wanted good links into the central city and a connected network of cycle routes.
The working group met for the last time on 30 May 2016. Recommendations went to the Transport and Urban Development Committee on 8 June 2016.
