Proposed 2018: Contra-flow bike lane in lower Wilson Street

Why this solution?

A contra-flow lane on lower Wilson Street was proposed in 2018. It was considered an appropriate design for this relatively quiet one-way street which has less traffic and low vehicle speeds. Other sections of the connection between Kilbirnie and the Newtown shops were developed, but following consultation, Councillors agreed that decisions on this part of Wilson Street should be considered as part of developing safe biking routes in the Newtown area.

Proposed impacts of the 2018 design:
  • On the one-way section of Wilson Street, 15 parking spaces would be removed on the southern side of the road. Four angle parking bays would be added at the Daniell Street intersection. 
  • The width of the traffic lane would be narrowed slightly from 3.2m to 3m.
  • The short section of footpath at the end of Wilson Street (next to Riddiford Street) would become a shared path.
  • There would be a new section of shared path next to the footpath behind the proposed angle parking at Daniell Street.

Councillor decisions 

Sharrow road markings on the two-way upper section of Wilson Street, and any changes for the one-way lower section of Wilson Street to be considered as part of community engagement for Newtown Connections.

Why this solution?
  • For upper Wilson Street, Option A (bike lanes on both sides of the road) had the most community support but Option C (sharrows) was considered more appropriate at this time. It was felt the safety gains to be had from Option A were not sufficient to justify the significant parking loss that would be required. Option C works well with this section of Wilson Street and the connection to Coromandel Street, Constable Street and Crawford Road, and is appropriate for this relatively quiet street with less traffic and low vehicle speeds.
  • Lower Wilson Street is now part of the Newtown Connections project. Councillors decided in March 2018 that any decisions about this part of the street should be made as part of developing safe biking routes in Berhampore, Newtown and Mt Cook.

Previously considered in 2017

There are two parts of Wilson Street, the one way section and the two way section. The one way section has two options and the two way section has three options.

The impacts on intersections, pedestrian crossings and driveways will be detailed in the next stage of design and available for feedback in November.

One-way section - Riddiford Street to Daniell Street

Why Option A?

This option provides an improved route east (towards Kilbirnie) for people on bikes. The sharrow markings increase driver awareness of people on bikes. More parking is removed in this option than Option B. This option has a higher cost than Option B, however the likely uptake by people on bikes is the same.

Impacts
  • Footpath reduced in width from 2.4m to 2.0m on both sides

  • Traffic lane increases from 3.2m to 3.5m

  • About 15 parking spaces removed on south side

  • No changes to existing driveways

  • Likely uptake by people on bikes: Moderate increase

 

Option B - Sharrow markings, cycling one way only.

Why Option B?

Sharrow markings increase driver awareness of people on bikes, but are unlikely to encourage less confident riders to use the route. People cycling towards Newtown would use Constable Street. This option retains more parking than Option A. This option has a lower cost than Option A, however the likely uptake by people on bikes is the same.
