Options for this section of road were put forward for community feedback in September 2017.

Option likely to be developed: Alternative route along Kauri Street with sharrow road markings

HobartKedahWexford C
Why this option?

From the feedback received in September 2017, this option had more community support than Options A or B. The proposed change would be appropriate for Kauri Street which has less traffic and low vehicle speeds. This route would need to connect to the northern section of Hobart Street.

Option A - One-way bike lanes (kerbside or traffic-side), with parking removed on one side of the road
HobartKedahWexford A
Why Option A?

This option uses the route up Hobart Street, between Kedah Street and Wexford Road. The one-way bike lanes (kerbside or traffic-side) would improve safety for people on bikes, and could encourage less-confident riders to use the route. Parking would have to be removed from one side of the street for this option, unlike Options B and C.

Impacts
  • Parking removed on one side of the street
  • No change to footpaths
  • No trees would be removed
  • Likely uptake by people on bikes: Moderate to high increase

Option B: One-way bike lanes (kerbside or traffic-side), includes road widening and reducing footpath width
HobartKedahWexford B
Why Option B?

This option uses the route up Hobart Street, between Kedah Street and Wexford Road. The one-way bike lanes (kerbside or traffic-side) would improve safety for people on bikes, and could encourage less-confident riders to use the route. Trees may have to be removed and the footpath narrowed for this option, unlike Options A and C.

Impacts
  • No changes to parking
  • Footpath narrowed slightly
  • Likely uptake by people on bikes: Moderate to high increase

Option C - Alternative route along Kauri Street with sharrows
HobartKedahWexford C
Why Option C?

This option uses a route with less traffic and lower speeds, reducing crash risk and severity. The alternative route up Kauri Street and Wexford Road is different from Options A and B. This option would cost less than options on the Hobart Street route.

Impacts
  • No changes to parking
  • No change to footpaths
  • No trees would be removed
  • Traffic speeds may need to be reduced
  • Likely uptake by people on bikes: Moderate increase
