The plans summarised here are what we consulted on - we will upload the final designs when they're completed.

Improved safety for pedestrians
  • New stop sign on Colombo Street at the Rintoul Street intersection
  • New raised crossing on Rintoul Street near Wakefield Hospital and Arvida Village
  • Raise and improve the existing crossing at South Wellington Intermediate School driveway
  • Raised crossing on the southern side of Rintoul Street at the intersection with Luxford Street
New safe biking connections
  • Southbound – the bike lane on Riddiford Street will be extended from Mein Street to Rintoul Street
  • Southbound – people on bikes will have the option of transitioning across to the right-turn lane (they could do this at Mein Street) or use a hook turn on Emmett Street so they can travel across the road on the Emmett Street light phase
  • Southbound – separated uphill bike lane on Rintoul Street to Wakefield Hospital (shared downhill traffic lane to Luxford Street)
  • Northbound – separated uphill bike lane on Rintoul Street from Luxford Street to Wakefield Hospital (shared downhill traffic lane to Riddiford Street)
  • Northbound from Rintoul Street intersection – a short bus and bike lane will connect with the bike lane on Riddiford Street
  • Northbound riders in the left-hand lane at Hall Street will have an advanced green light signal.
Bus stop changes
  • On Rintoul Street:
    • relocate bus stop 7121 about 48m south so it’s closer to the new pedestrian crossing for Wakefield Hospital and Arvida Village
    • relocate bus stop 6121 (at Wakefield Hospital) about 25m north to make space for a new raised crossing
    • relocate bus stop 7122 at Te Wharepōuri Street about 6m north so the bus can pull in close to the kerb
    • relocate bus stop 6123 (near 91 Rintoul) about 12m north so it’s closer to the crossing at Te Wharepōuri Street and the bus can pull in close to the kerb
    • new raised platforms at two bus stops - at stop 6120 and stop 7122 near Te Wharepōuri Street (with a new bus shelter)
    • no-stopping lines and more space on either end of all bus stops so it's easier for buses to pull in and out
    • additional places for opposing buses to pass each other
  • On Riddiford Street:
    • relocate bus stop 7018 about 6m south so there’s more space for merging vehicles turning left into Hall Street across the bus/bike lane
    • new section of shared bus and bike lane (northbound).

Parking changes

Riddiford Street – Mein Street to Rintoul Streeet
  • Remove six parking spaces on the eastern side near Rintoul Street intersection (three P60/P10 drop-off parking spaces and three P30 parking spaces)
  • Replace four P5 parking spaces on the western side of Riddiford Street with one off-peak P30 loading zone (9.30am to 3pm)
  • Replace two P60 parking spaces on Emmett Street with one P10 parking space and one loading zone (8am to 8pm) near Riddiford Street
Rintoul Street – Riddiford Street to Luxford Street

The proposed new resident parking scheme for Berhampore and Newtown (P120 except for residents) would apply to the parking that remains on these streets.

Proposed changes here include:

  • Keep the mobility parking space near Newtown Medical Centre
  • Parking will be on one side of the street only, alternating with separated uphill bike lanes
  • Keep about 65 unrestricted parking spaces (and change to P120 residents exempt through the new parking scheme)
  • Remove about 100 parks, including:
    • about 27 unrestricted parking spaces on the western end of Rintoul Street between Luxford Street and Wakefield Hospital
    • about 68 unrestricted parks on the eastern side from Riddiford Street up to Wakefield Hospital
    • one unrestricted parking space outside 104 Rintoul Street so buses can pass
    • one unrestricted parking space north of the driveway exit from South Wellington Intermediate School for improved safety
    • two unrestricted parking spaces outside 224 and 226 Rintoul Street to make the new raised crossing visible
    • two P10 parking spaces on the western side at the intersection with Riddiford Street to improve safety
    • one P5 parking space outside 201 Rintoul Street
    • four unrestricted spaces outside 181 Rintoul Street to improve the bus stop
  • Change five unrestricted parks:
    • Replace three unrestricted parking spaces outside 211 Rintoul Street with two P10 spaces and one P120 parking space for access to nearby businesses
    • Replace two unrestricted parking spaces outside 179 Rintoul Street with two P120 spaces
  • Change and/or relocate some time-restricted spaces:
    • Replace two P15 parking spaces and two P60 parking spaces on the western side between Colombo and Riddiford streets with one P90 space, three P15 spaces and one loading zone

Note: Numbers of unrestricted parks are approximate as individual spaces are not marked.
